Back-to-back-to-back homers lift TMU in two-game sweep

By the time Jaiden France recounted Friday's double-header, it had all become a blur of bat-on-ball brutality.

The senior was sure The Master's University's back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning of game two had all sailed over the left field fence.

"Hold on," he said.

No, Aaron Shackelford's went to right, France said, "it was a no-doubter."

Of this there is no doubt: The  Mustangs hit five home runs against Menlo College on Friday, two each coming from France and Shackelford, and won 11-0 and 5-0 at Cartan Field in Atherton.

In game one, the Mustangs (20-13, 12-10 in Golden State Athletic Conference) scored four runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

France hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, giving him a home run in each of TMU's last four games. Shackelford hit a three-run shot an inning later to give him six home runs in his last 10 games.

Master's was just getting started.

In the first inning of game two, Shackelford connected on a two-run homer to right field. Then France parked one to left center.

"As I touched home plate, I told Josh (Robison), 'It's your turn. Do it right now. Do it,'" France said. "Once he did it, I was just pumped. It was ridiculous."

It was Robison's seventh home run of the year. He and Shackelford lead the Mustangs in that category.

The day built on Tuesday's strong offensive performance against Bethesda University and further distanced the Mustangs from a bumpy stint at the plate.

"We're swinging it really well (this week)," Shackelford said.

Said France, "I don't want to say I've figured it out, but I'm really comfortable, and mentally I'm just locked in."

TMU pitching locked down Menlo (13-18, 9-14). Game one starter Scott Savage tossed seven scoreless innings to match his longest outing of the season.

Game two hurler Robert Winslow had one of his best games of 2018, going five innings and striking out nine.

Relievers Aidan Stout and Preston White kept Menlo off the board in the final two frames of game two. But the day belonged to the offense.

In game one, senior Josh Robison went 3-for-5. White, the Mustangs' leading hitter on the year, finished 2-for-3 and scored three runs. And Shackelford was 2-for-5 with four RBIs, while Pearson Good was 1-for-2 with a trio of runs batted in.

The Mustangs did most of their damage in the first frame of game two. Robison provided insurance in the fourth when he stole home.

The teams are set to meet again Saturday in a single game. First pitch is at noon.
