There was no comeback this time.
Â
After four consecutive come-from-behind victories, The Master's University dug too deep a hole Friday afternoon and fell 7-1 to Vanguard.
Â
The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak and dropped the Mustangs to 7-3 in the GSAC and 13-5 overall.
Â
TMU trails first-place William Jessup by half a game.
Â
They do so because of the right arm of Lion starter Jordan Dreibelbis.
Â
The big senior scattered five hits through eight innings of work, limiting the Mustangs to their lowest run total of the campaign. Their five hits equaled a season-low.
Â
Mustang starter
Scott Savage was just as effective as Dreibelbis through the first three frames, holding the Lions to a single.
Â
That all changed in the last of the fourth when Vanguard parlayed a walk, a sacrifice fly, and three singles into three runs.
Â
The Mustangs got one of those runs back in the fifth when
Josh Robison led off with a single, advanced to second base on a wild pitch with two outs, and scored on
Pearson Good's infield single.
Â
That was it, though, as Dreibelbis quieted their bats over the next three innings.
Â
Vanguard added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, chasing Savage (1-1) after 6 2/3 innings.
Â
The Lions tacked on two more runs in the eighth to finish off the win.
Â
Junior
Aaron Shackelford led the Mustangs with two hits.
Â
The Mustangs have a chance to get the bad taste of a loss out of their mouth quickly when they return to Costa Mesa on Saturday for a doubleheader with the Lions.
