Mustangs drop two against OUAZ

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Master's baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against the OUAZ Spirit in Surprise, Ariz.

The Mustangs (24-23, 13-14) have now lost four in a row and five of their last six and currently hold just a half-game lead over Benedictine Mesa for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming GSAC Championship tournament.

Game 1

OUAZ scored seven in the first inning, four in the fourth and one in the fifth to defeat TMU 12-1 in a game called in the seventh due to the mercy rule.

James Coker got the start and took the loss, going 3.1 innings and giving up 11 runs (nine earned) and nine hits. He struck out three and walked one.

The Mustangs defense committed three errors in the game.

The lone run for Master's came in the top of the sixth and the team already down 12-0. Emilio Morales got a 1-out single and was followed by Ty Beck who also singled, sending Morales to third. Ryder Frith-Smith came on to run for Morales and Owen Payn for Beck, and when a wild pitch went to the backstop, Frith-Smith scored.

TMU mustered four hits in the game, with Morales getting two of them.

Game 2

A 2-1 lead by The Master's was erased in the fifth inning when the Spirit scored two, going on to win 5-2.

After giving up a run in the bottom of the first, the Mustangs scored two in the top of the third when Isaiah Morales singled to score Payn, running for Dylan Taguiam who reached on an error. Emilio Morales then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Cole Rohlmeier to give TMU a 2-1 lead.

But the Spirit scored two in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to take the 5-2 win in seven innings.

Gage Webster got the start on the mound, going 5.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits while striking out one.

The Mustangs' offense spread five hits among five different players, with Emilio Morales getting his first career triple.

The Master's will finish up the series and the regular season Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against OUAZ. Benedictine Mesa has a doubleheader against Arizona Christian in Mesa, Ariz. If Master's defeats OUAZ Saturday, and the Redhawks lose one of the two against the Firestorm, The Mustangs will get the fourth and final spot in the GSAC Championship tournament.
