Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Carson Ohl can surely throw.
His performance was what gave the Mustangs a split in both the second doubleheader and the season series against Arizona Christian University (ACU) with a 9-7 loss in the first game and a dominant 18-1 win at Greenway High School in Glendale, Ariz. Saturday evening.
While Ohl put on a show in game two, The Master's (23-15, 9-11) put on a good team effort to split the season series against the No. 16 Arizona Christian Firestorm (30-10-1, 10-6).
Notably, junior Ty Beck recorded two home runs in the doubleheader. Hw now leads the team with 18 home runs this season.
Game 1
The Mustangs and Firestorm were neck-and-neck throughout the entire game, with the Mustangs falling short in a 9-7 loss.
Senior Gage Webster started for the Mustangs and was given the loss, allowing nine hits and nine runs while throwing five strikeouts in his 5.2 assignment.
Things were quiet before the Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, coming from Kobe Katayama scoring off a single by left fielder Jack Drew and a 2-run home run by first baseman Austin Young.
The Firestorm responded by tying the game 3-3 with a 3-run home run in the third inning, before things went quiet in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Ty Beck recorded his 17th home run of the season to give the Mustangs the lead again. But the Firestorm responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, getting their first lead of the game at 5-4.
A Katayama single got Cason Brownell home while a single by Dylan Tagium would get Drew home, giving the Mustangs a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth. But the Firestorm collected four runs in the bottom of the sixth as they took a 9-6 lead over the Mustangs.
That deficit would be too large to overcome, as the Mustangs would only record one more run in the ninth.
Senior Michael Chung came on in relief for 2.1 innings, allowing only one hit to close the game.
Game 2
Carson Ohl pitched all seven innings, holding the Firestorm to four hits and one run and throwing 11 strikeouts to give the Mustangs a dominant 18-1 win.
It was the Mustangs' turn to start the game swinging, as they took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Jacob Kowes fired a double to get pinch runner Ewan Leonard and center fielder Scotty Pieper home before a single by Katayama brought Kowes home.
Owen Payn opened the second inning with a homer to left field while an error got Pieper home. A sacrifice fly by Drew got Leonard home before a Katayama single got Beck home to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead.
In the third inning, Kowes blasted a home run to get Beck, Leonard and himself home to give the Mustangs an 11-0 lead.Â
In the fourth inning, Drew would record a home run to get himself home before a Pieper single got Katayama and a Beck walk got shortstop Tommy Gwinn home.
Things would go quiet in the fifth before the Mustangs got back to swinging, as Beck recorded his 18th home run to get Young, Matt Lloyd and himself home. Then Brownell recorded his second home run of the doubleheader to give the Mustangs an 18-0 lead.
Ohl had a chance to tally his second straight shutout of the season, but a single in the seventh inning ruined that chance.
With their two wins over ACU, the Mustangs will overtake Embry-Riddle to move into fourth place in the GSAC.
But the Mustangs will not play their last conference opponent, Benedictine University Mesa (AZ), until April 22, as their next game will be against Bethesda University of California in Anaheim, Calif. on April 9. The first game starts at 12 p.m.
