Box Score LA VERNE, Calif. -- Carson Ohl pitched an 8-inning gem, giving up only two hits in The Master's 3-0 win over the University of La Verne Thursday.

Ohl, a transfer from Virgina Tech, struck out five and only issued one walk in his 90-pitch performance. Gage Webster came on in the ninth to retire the side to preserve the Mustangs' win.

"This was an incredibly pitched game by those two seniors," TMU Head Coach Monte Brooks said. "We played very good defense and hit the ball well. A very good game against a very good and well-coached team."

The La Verne Leopards are ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division III.

Ohl gave up a single and a walk in the second inning and a single in the third and that was it. He then retired the next 17 batters in a row before giving way to Webster, who struck out two of the three batters he faced.

The Mustangs got on the board in the top of the second when Kobe Katayama led off with a single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After two outs were recorded, Owen Payn hit a ground-rule double to center to score Katayama.

Then in the fifth, Jacob Kowes led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Katayama then singled again to center to plate Kowes and The Master's led 2-0.

The Mustangs didn't get the final run until the ninth inning when Kowes hit a solo shot over the right-center field fence to make it 3-0.

TMU was able to pull together 12 hits in the game, led by Kowes going 4 for 5 with the home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Both Katayama and Ty Beck finished with a pair of hits each.

"Looking forward to a few days off for Easter Resurrection weekend, and then get back into conference," Brooks said.

The Master's will close out the regular season Tuesday and Wednesday when they host the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks for a pair of GSAC doubleheaders. The Mustangs currently sit in fourth place in the conference standings, with the top four teams advancing to the post-season GSAC tournament. A sweep of the Redhawks will ensure TMU's travel plans for the post-season.

First pitch both days is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
