Box Score The Master's University's women's volleyball team finished off a successful trip to Omaha, Neb. with a 3-set win over Northwest (WA) University Saturday at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic.
The Lady Mustangs (5-4) hit .169 in the 26-24, 25-18, 25-17 victory. They had more kills (46-28), more blocks (8-5) and more service aces (6-2).
"Our goal was to win in three sets, and we did," TMU Head Coach Annett Davis said. "I'm very proud of these girls and the effort they put in this weekend."
The team went 2-2 in the tournament, but three of the four teams were ranked in the top 16 and every match was competitive.
In the first set of this final it was the Eagles from Northwest that jumped out to an 8-3 lead. But The Lady Mustangs (5-4) worked their way back to tie it at 12-12. NU pulled away to a 3-point lead at 20-17, and a few moments later broke a tie off a TMU attack error to create set point at 24-23. But a kill by
Isabella Amet, an ace from
Kinsley Kollmann, and finally a kill from
Ruby Duncan meant three straight points for The Master's and the set win.
The second set initially started close, with the Eagles gaining a 6-4 advantage. TMU then went on a 7-0 run to take a 5-point lead. Moments later they added a 6-0 run that Northwest could never recover from, closing out with the 7-point set win.
The third set was practically a carbon copy of the second, with Northwest getting a 7-4 lead to start. But once again the Lady Mustangs went on a run, this time 8-1, to take a 12-8 advantage. That was followed moments later by a 6-1 run to put the team up 18-11. From there they maintained their advantage to win by eight and take the match.
Grace Colburn led the team with 13 kills and added three blocks two aces and a game-high 28 digs. Duncan finished with 12 kills and Amet had nine.
Timberlie Miller dished 45 assists (15/set) and
McKenna Brady had a team-high seven blocks.
A unique element to the match was TMU libero
Sierra Hale's sister Savannah plays for Northwest. It was the first time the sisters, who are from Sandy, Ore., played against each other in college, and they did so in Omaha, Neb.
"I am so grateful to be able to be in the same state as my sister to play and the fact that we got to play each other is such a cool experience," the TMU Hale said. "Even though competing against  someone I love so much isn't my favorite thing, I am so grateful for the moments I get to have with her, even if it's across the net."
The Master's will have two scrimmages this week against former GSAC rivals. First they play Westmont in Santa Barbara on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m., followed by Vanguard on Wednesday in Costa Mesa starting at 5:30 p.m.
