Box Score In the first start of his collegiate career,
Ryan Shalkevich gave up just one run in 5.2 innings pitched to lead The Master's to a 4-3 non-conference win over the Bethesda Flames Tuesday at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
Shalkevich got the win, giving up the one earned run on five hits and striking out four.
Cale Mathison came on in relief in the sixth inning, closing out the final 3.1 innings to get the save.
"After the first inning, [Shalkevich] settled in and he was great," said TMU Head Coach
Monte Brooks. "He's just a fearless kid. He keeps getting more and more confidence every outing. He's a freshman who doesn't pitch like a freshman. I love his eagerness to get better, he's got a very good work ethic and he wants to be good."
An RBI single in the top of the first put Bethesda on the board. But in the bottom of the inning with
Cason Brownell at third,
Owen Payn stole second, causing Brownell to take off for the plate on the throw to second, scoring easily to tie the game at 1-1.
Then in the bottom of the third it was Payn scoring on the
Miles Henderson groundout to put TMU up 2-1. Two innings later,
Ty Beck's single to center scored Brownell.
The Mustangs went up 4-1 in the seventh when Joe DeFrancisco's single scored
Kobe Katayama. Bethesda made the game close by scoring two in the top of the ninth, but back-to-back strikeouts by Mathison stranded two runners and gave The Master's the 4-3 win.
The Flames weren't the only team to strand runners as TMU left 14 runners on base. The Mustangs had 11 hits and seven walks.
"We got them on, we got them over, we didn't get them in," Brooks said.
Ty Beck finished 3 for 3 with an RBI, while
Austin Young went 3 for 4,
Matt Lloyd 2 for 3 and Brownell 2 for 4.
The season comes to a close on Wednesday for The Master's when they host the University of La Verne Leopards at Lou Herwaldt Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
