Mustangs fall to Spirit in series finale

Box Score The Master's gave up six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to fall 8-2 to the OUAZ Spirit Saturday in Surprise, Ariz.

Mustangs starting pitcher Gage Webster had been looking fantastic up until that fifth inning, allowing just one hit of shutout baseball. With two outs and a runner on second, the wheels started to come off as a walk, a single and a pair of doubles put four on the board for OUAZ.

Ryan Shalkevich came on in relief and was greeted by an error that would have ended the inning. A 2-run single then followed to score two unearned runs, with one of those runs charged to Webster.

The Master's started the game off well, getting an RBI double from Ty Beck in the top of the first to score Owen Payn. TMU threatened again in the fourth when they loaded the bases with just one out. But a groundball to third created a fielder's choice at home, which was followed by a flyball to centerfield to finish off the threat.

After OUAZ had the big fifth inning, adding two more in the sixth, the Mustangs (12-7, 4-5) added one more in the top of the ninth when Austin Young singled up the middle to score Conor Christiansen, but that was all they could muster, losing the game by six.

Beck finished 3 for 4 with the RBI and Young finished 3 for 5 with his RBI. Only two other Mustangs got a hit.

The Master's will be back home on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Westcliff, followed by a 3-game series Friday and Saturday against the University of Antelope Valley.
