Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 A huge inning in the first game and a pitcher's duel in the second meant a split in Friday's doubleheader between RV The Master's and the OUAZ Spirit Friday in Surprise, Ariz.

Game 1

The Mustangs used an 8-run third inning to defeat the Spirit 13-2 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader in Surprise, Ariz.

All nine batters in the TMU lineup got at least one base hit, with eight of those players also adding at least one RBI. That was more than enough support for starting pitcher Robby Schardt who gave up two earned runs on eight hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings.

The Master's generated their 8-run inning with just four hits, two OUAZ errors and a bases-loaded walk. Davis Beavers' bases-loaded single that drove in two, followed by Tommy Gwinn's 2-RBI double, were the biggest hits of the inning.

The Spirit scored one in the bottom of the third and another run in the fourth. But the Mustangs added four more runs in the seventh, all scored with two outs in the inning, and tacked on one more in the ninth, to collect the 13-2 win.

Ryan Shalkevich followed Schardt with 2.0 innings of scoreless, 1-hit pitching. Adler Stout tossed a scoreless ninth.

Austin Young, Ryan Mathiesen, Cason Brownell and Beavers all had two hits apiece. Young, Ty Beck, Miles Henderson, Beavers and Gwinn also added two RBI each.

Game 2

Pitchers from both teams allowed just three runs and struck out a total of 19 batters in a 7-inning game as the Spirit knocked off the Mustangs 2-1 in game two.

TMU got on the board first in the top of the second when Kobe Katayama's single drove in Miles Henderson.

The Spirit tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Daniel Durazo hit a walk-off triple to right field to score the winning run.

The Master's started J.T. Friesen on the bump, who gave up one run on six hits and struck out three in 3.2 innings. He gave way to Carson Knapp for the final 2.3 inning. Knapp took the loss.

Mustangs bats had a tough time figuring out Spirit starter Trey Trimble, who went 5.0 innings giving up the one earned run on three hits and struck out 10. TMU finished with four hits in the game.

These two teams will finis off their three-game series Saturday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. PT.
