TMU Women's Volleyball fires on all cylinders in sweep of ACU

The Master's University women's indoor volleyball team never trailed at any point in any set, putting on a dominant display in a three-sweet sweep of Arizona Christian University on Tuesday night by set scores of 25-21, 25-14, 26-15.

"I could not be more proud of the solid performance our team gave tonight," Master's head coach Annett Davis said. "From our passing to our blocking to our hitting, we were focused and we executed our game plan."

The Mustangs took an early lead in the first set, going up 12-8 before the Firestorm scored three-straight points to get to within one. Master's responded with three consecutive points of their own to gain back control.

A 6-2 run late in the set reduced ACU's deficit to two, 21-23, prompting a TMU timeout. The timeout did the trick, with the Mustangs winning the final two points, as Faith Tarver finished off the set with a kill.

In the second set with TMU up 12-11, a Madi Maitland kill sparked a 5-0 Mustang run to put Master's ahead by six. Then with a 19-14 lead, the Mustangs scored six-straight points to take the second set, with the final three points coming off blocks from the likes of Emilye Grace Williams, Jessi Swenning and Katie Emmerling.

The chance of ACU (3-5 overall, 2-3) forcing a fourth set was quickly evaporated with TMU jumping out to a 15-3 lead in the third. Master's (5-2, 3-2) ultimately won the third by nine points to complete its second sweep in its past three matches.

"Without a solid passing performance, I think this story would be different," Davis said. "Our setters were able to have multiple options on most of our plays, which made it a lot of fun to watch and also for them to play."

Tarver led the Mustangs with her 13 kills, with Swenning and Williams each tacking on eight. Just like the entire TMU team as a whole, Emmerling put together a well-rounded display with her 34 assists, 10 digs and three service aces.

Defensively, Karli Stults led Master's with 11 digs, while Swenning's four blocks were most on the team.

"We got to play almost all of our freshmen as well, but what made it more special was how excited our upperclassmen were for them," Davis said.

Both teams are set to return to The MacArthur Center on Wednesday night, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
