TMU Women's Indoor Volleyball did something on Wednesday night that it had not done yet this season: beat the same team for a second-straight night.
Â
Master's previously beat Life Pacific and Ottawa University Arizona on the first night of a back-to-back, but were unable to win the second match the following day. This time, the Mustangs completed the job, sweeping Arizona Christian once again; this time by set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-18.
Â
"Tonight our goal was to put together another win," Master's head coach
Annett Davis said. "Winning two-in-a-row against the same team has eluded us, so I am proud of how we finished."
Â
In the first set, the Mustangs fought off a couple Firestorm runs to take an early advantage in the match. Down 11-14, an
Emily Scott kill and subsequent service ace helped the Mustangs regain their first-set lead.
After falling behind again, five-straight TMU points culminated by a
Faith Tarver service ace put Master's up 22-18. After a Firestorm point, an
Emilye Grace Williams kill and
Karli Stults service ace gave the Mustangs set point ahead by five.
Â
However, ACU threatened to tie the set with four-straight points before Davis called a timeout with her team clinging to a one-point lead. The delay in action had the intended effect, with Master's claiming the next point to take the first set by two.
Â
The Firestorm continued their late first-set surge into the second, racing out to a 5-2 lead. TMU reduced ACU's advantage to one, before a 6-0 run put Master's ahead, 16-11. The Mustangs' lead never got lower than four the rest of the set, as TMU took a commanding two-set-to-none advantage in the match.
Â
The third set remained close throughout with neither team leading by more than three points, until at 20-18, Master's scored the final five points of the set. That 5-0 streak to complete the sweep was bookended by Williams' kills.
Â
Williams led TMU with 12 kills, while
Katie Emmerling recorded 27 assists to pace the Mustangs. Both Williams and Emmerling contributed nine digs on the night.
Â
Defensively,
Jessi Swenning led the Mustangs with four blocks while Stults tallied the most digs on the team with 11.
Â
Master's improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Mustangs are scheduled to return to conference action on March 16 at 6 p.m. when TMU hosts William Jessup inside The MacArthur Center for the first match of a back-to-back set between the two teams.
