TMU Women's Volleyball honors seniors with sweep of William Jessup

The Master's University women's indoor volleyball team honored its three seniors – Kinzi Lockhart, Madi Maitland and Katie Emmerling – in the best way possible, sweeping William Jessup on Tuesday night inside The MacArthur Center by set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-9.

"The seniors should be very proud of themselves," Master's head coach Annett Davis said. "They played well and certainly are leaving behind a legacy of hard work and a competitive spirit of excellence."

In the first set, William Jessup took an early 5-1 advantage, but TMU battled back to take the lead twice. After the Warriors tied the set back up at 13-13, a 7-0 Mustangs' run, fueled by two Emilye Grace Williams kills and an Emmerling service ace, sent Master's on its way to claiming the first set.

"The girls started off a bit shaky, probably due to being nervous about it being Senior Night," Davis said. "But once we got into it, it was mostly uphill from there."

TMU controlled the early part of the second set, but with the Mustangs leading 17-12, the Warriors scored seven of the next eight points to go ahead by one. However, TMU responded with a 4-0 run to take back control of the set, which was clinched with an Emily Scott kill.

"I'm proud of our girls for reigning in the errors and starting to capitalize on scoring opportunities," Davis said.

The Mustangs then ran away with the third set, racing out to a 7-0 lead, which prompted a Jessup timeout. The Warriors called for a second timeout after another 7-0 TMU run put the Mustangs ahead 14-2. Master's led by as many as 17 points at 21-4 before ultimately taking the set by a 16-point margin.

Just as she did the second set, Scott also finished off the third with a kill, one of her match-leading 12 on the night. Williams added 10 kills for the Mustangs.

Emmerling and Williams each served three aces, while Faith Tarver recorded two of her own. Emmerling also tied for the team lead in blocks with two, joining Maitland and Jessi Swenning with multiple.

The senior setter paced the offense with her 26 assists, while Karli Stults (16) and Tarver (11) led the Mustangs in digs.

Master's (7-2 overall, 5-2 GSAC) will return to Bross Court for one final time this season on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. to take on William Jessup (3-8, 1-6) once again in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
