TMU Women's Volleyball wins fourth-straight match in sweeping fashion

The Master's University women's indoor volleyball team extended its sweep-winning streak to four matches with a straight-sets victory over William Jessup (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) on Wednesday afternoon inside The MacArthur Center.

"Our team seems to be finding its stride," Master's head coach Annett Davis said. "The girls are playing some of the best volleyball that they've played this season."

Trailing by one in the first set, TMU scored six-straight points, two of which came off Emily Scott kills, to take a 13-8 advantage. The Mustangs' lead got cut to 18-15, only for a Faith Tarver kill to spark a 4-0 run that put Master's up by seven, the final margin TMU won the first set by.

With an 8-4 lead in the second set, another 6-0 TMU run capped off by consecutive blocks from Jessi Swenning and Katie Emmerling put the Mustangs up by double digits. Master's then one-upped itself with seven-straight points to take a 21-6 advantage. William Jessup scored 10 of the next 11 points to cut into its deficit, but a Madi Maitland kill clinched the set for TMU.

The visitors continued that late second-set momentum into the third, taking a 6-1 lead early on. Helped by two Cora Machado blocks, Master's responded immediately with five-straight points to tie the set. Then leading 16-15, the Mustangs gained further separation with a 4-0 run. WJU got to within two with the score 22-20 in favor of TMU, but a 3-0 Master's run finished off the set and completed the sweep.

"The team is having fun and playing some solid volleyball," Davis said. "Skills that they've worked on in practice are coming out in their match play. It's encouraging to see."

Tarver put in a tremendous all-around performance, recording a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Her double-digit kills were the most on the Mustangs, as were her three service aces.

Maitland (six kills) led TMU with five blocks, followed closely behind by Swenning's four and Emmerling's three.

Emmerling orchestrated the offense with her 30 assists. Karli Stults' 11 digs were the most by any Mustang.

Master's (8-2 overall, 6-2 GSAC) is tied with Ottawa University Arizona (8-5, 6-2) atop the GSAC East standings. TMU will hit the road for its final two matches of the regular season to take on Life Pacific (10-7, 4-4), with whom the Mustangs are 1-1 against this year.
