Box Score It was a back-and-forth match, but in each set The Master's women's volleyball was able to pull away at the end to defeat the Occidental Tigers in 27-25, 25-18, 25-23.
The Mustangs (4-2) had 38 kills versus the Tigers 36; 14 blocks to Oxy's 10; five aces compared to seven. But it was their drive at the end of each set that separated TMU and lead to their three-set win.
"Our middles did a great job tonight," said Head Coach
Annett Davis. "Our setters were able to get them the ball and they did a great job scoring for us."
In the first set, Oxy led 23-21 before the Lady Mustangs closed the set on a 6-2 run to win it.
The second set was just as tight. TMU led 17-15 before closing the set on an 8-3 run.
And in the third it was more of the same. The Lady Mustangs were down 17-16, then tied twice at 19-19 and again at 23-23.
Ruby Duncan got the last of her team-high 11 kills that took it to match point before Jessi Swenning hammered down an overpass for the match winner.
Swenning finished with eight kills and a game-high four blocks.
Natalie Collins had 18 assists followed by
Timberlie Miller's 11. Brooks and Miller each had a pair of service aces. Coach Davis singled out
Breanna Brooks, who tallied seven kills and a team-high nine digs, for her overall game.
"
Breanna Brooks stood out tonight, hitting well, blocking and she led the team in digs."
The Master's will next face RV Westmont in the GSAC opener in Santa Barbara on Saturday. Start time is 7 p.m.
