No. 4 TMU Women's Volleyball nearly upset No. 1 Vanguard University on Saturday in Huntington Beach, falling 2-3 for the Mustangs' first Golden State Athletic Conference loss of the season, before Master's ended the day on a high note with a 3-2 victory over (RV) San Diego Christian.
Â
"With 20-30 mph wind gusts, it was a tough day to play beach volleyball but our girls were great sports and maintained good attitudes," Master's Head Coach
Annett Davis said. "We were very close to beating Vanguard. I'm very proud of how our team fought."
Â
TMU's number four (
Emilye Grace Williams and
Annika Booker – 14-21, 21-15, 15-10) and five (
Zoe Kira and
CJ Catabona – 21-15, 21-15) duos won their matchups, with
Evi Yates and
Kasie Spencer nearly pulling off a win at number two before falling in three sets.
Â
Yates and Spencer then won their match in the afternoon against San Diego Christian (12-21, 21-10, 15-11), with Williams and Booker (21-18, 21-19) and Kira and Catabona (21-13, 21-13) also picking up points once again at numbers four and five respectively.
Â
"It was also a good weekend for our 6's, 7's and 8's," Davis said. "All of them got to play and had some highly competitive matches."
Â
Master's, now 8-4 overall and 7-1 in the GSAC, returns to the TMU Beach Volleyball Courts on Friday for an 11 a.m. conference match against Life Pacific University before hosting Marymount California University in a 3 p.m. non-conference contest.
