TMU Beach Volleyball is no stranger to gusting winds while playing in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Â
That reality paid dividends on Friday in Huntington Beach, when No. 4 TMU Beach Volleyball overcame windy conditions to defeat second-ranked Ottawa University Arizona 3-2 and (RV) Arizona Christian University 4-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Â
"It was a windy day in Huntington Beach, which made it tough to play in," Master's Head Coach
Annett Davis said. "We are thankful that our girls experience a ton of wind on the TMU courts. Our experience was very helpful today."
Â
The Mustangs began the day by beating the No. 2 team in the NAIA.
Â
CJ Catabona and
Zoe Kira remained unbeaten as a duo, cruising to a 21-9, 21-6 victory as TMU's fifth pairing.
Evi Yates and
Kasie Spencer then won their twos match (24-22, 21-17) before
Emilye Grace Williams and
Annika Booker sealed the overall win for Master's with a 21-19, 14-21, 15-12 victory at number four.
Â
Then against ACU in the afternoon, Catabona and Kira suffered their first loss as a duo in eight contests this season, but the Mustangs won every other matchup to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Â
Johnson and Wilson (22-20, 21-19), Yates and Spencer (21-8, 21-15) and
Tara Long and
Kaylie Phelps (21-14, 20-22, 15-11) won their respective matches at numbers one through three.
Â
Once again, Williams and Booker (21-19, 22-20) won the clinching match for the Mustangs at number four.
Â
"
Annika Booker and
Emilye Grace Williams were blessed with some big wins today," Davis said. "They secured the third win in both of our matches today."
Â
Master's (7-3 overall, 6-0 GSAC) will battle with No. 1 Vanguard University on Saturday at 11 a.m. before concluding the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against San Diego Christian College.
