No. 5 TMU Beach Volleyball picked up its second ranked win of 2022 and extended its program-best start to a season with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Saint Katherine, before falling to NCAA Division II Concordia University Irvine, 1-4.
Â
"We had a good weekend," Master's Head Coach
Annett Davis said. "I am pleased overall with our level of play. We keep improving and are headed in the right direction."
Â
The Mustangs' fifth pairing of
CJ Catabona and
Zoe Kira won their match against Saint Katherine (21-8, 22-20), with the team's number two duo of
Kasie Spencer and
Evi Yates also winning (21-16, 21-12).
Â
"Kasie had lots of digs, making it difficult for their opponents," Davis said of TMU's number twos. "One of the highlights was Evi thumping a ball at game point to win our match versus Saint Katherine."
Â
TMU's top pair of
Kassidy Wilson and
Chloe Johnson clinched the overall victory with a 22-20, 10-21, 15-7 win at number one, helping Master's improve to 4-0 to start a season for the first time in program history.
Â
Then in the Mustangs' second match of the day, Catabona and Kira won again (17-21, 24-22, 15-11), picking up the team's only point in TMU's first loss of the season.
Â
"Our fives were solid once again," Davis said. "CJ and Zoe executed their game plans. They are a very tough team to play. They frustrate opponents with their defense and shots."
Â
Master's (4-1 overall) returns to Golden State Athletic Conference on Friday against Life Pacific University in San Dimas.
