Mustang baseball takes 1 of 2 in LSU doubleheader

The Master's University baseball squad split a home doubleheader with La Sierra University on Thursday, taking the first game 13-2 and falling in the second game 6-4.

Game 1
The Mustang offense was alive and well in the opener, mashing 18 hits and 13 runs across eight innings. The Mustangs hit six doubles and two homers, one from Emilio Morales, his eighth in the last 10 games, and another from Isaiah Morales

The Master's scored in every inning except the second and tallied five runs in the eighth.

"That was one of the best games we've played all season," TMU Head Coach Monte Brooks said. "Our execution was just solid all around."

That was more than enough offense for Carson Knapp, who got the start for TMU. Knapp went all eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight Golden Eagles. He also did not issue a walk to earn his third win of the season.

Ty Beck had three hits and three runs batted in, while Zach Jenkins also brought home two runs on three hits.

Game 2
The second game was fairly close most of the way, with Gage Webster on the bump for The Master's. Despite allowing a first-inning solo shot, Webster buckled down and pitched 4.2 innings of 2-run ball, striking out four batters.

The Mustang bats had a strong second inning, while multiple infield singles and heads-up baserunning, to take the lead by a score of 3-1.

"We did a great job in that second inning with our execution," Coach Brooks said. "We just struggled to drive runners in past that point."

That was the case for the rest of the afternoon, as TMU would strand nine runners across the game's seven innings. TMU's bullpen allowed LSU to build a 3-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh. However, Emilio Morales reached on an error, which brought the lead down to just two runs with the bases loaded. But La Sierra's Jayden Jones got Zach Jenkins to ground out, stranding the winning run on first base.

Cole Rohlmeier and Isaiah Morales each had two hits and Scotty Pieper drove in a run.

The opener-game win moved Coach Brooks to 898 career wins, just two short of 900. He could still achieve the mark at home, with one more home doubleheader coming up on Friday. After the second game, TMU will honor their graduating seniors as a part of their Senior Day festivities. The opening game's first pitch is scheduled 11 a.m.
