James Coker through a career-high seven strikeouts and
Ty Beck blasted his 20th home run of the season in The Master's 9-3 win over Providence Christian Tuesday at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
Coker combined with
Carson Knapp to strikeout 13 Sea Beggars in the 9-inning win. Knapp got the win as he pitched the final 4.1 innings
"I'm proud of Coker and Knappy," said TMU Head Coach
Monte Brooks. "And we had some big blows there to separate. So I'm just thankful to the Lord that we had an opportunity to play."
After giving up a run in the top of the third, the Mustangs (26-15, 9-11) broke it open in the bottom half of the inning scoring four.
Jacob Kowes,
Cason Brownell,
Kobe Katayama and
Wyatt Wagner all getting an RBI in the inning.
TMU added three more in the fourth when Beck blasted his 3-run home run over the right field fence scoring both
Scotty Pieper and
Owen Payn who had singled. Beck now sits fourth in the NAIA with his 20 home runs on the season.
The Sea Beggars responded with two more in the top of the fifth, but an RBI single from Beck in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a Kowes sacrifice fly to score
Ewan Leonard put the The Master's up for good at 9-3.
Austin Young finished 3 for 4 with a walk, while Pieper was 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Beck finished 2 for 4 with the home run and four RBIs and Wagner also finished 2 for 4 with an RBI as well.
"I'm really proud of the seniors," Coach Brooks said. "They're really pushing each other and trying to get the others to keep up. With the circumstances that took place through a little monkey wrench into the system. So how are we going to respond? The seniors have responded very well.
The Mustangs have one more big series as they will host the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks next week for four games. Win all four and they will qualify for the 4-team GSAC post-season tournament. Win three games or fewer in that series and TMU will need a little help.
"We've talked about getting to this point in the year, and here we are," Brooks said. "We have a shot. So we are very thankful."
One more non-conference game to play, which will be Wednesday when The Master's travel to take on the University of LaVerne. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
