Chloe Auble's career-high 29 points was not enough as The Master's women's basketball team fell in overtime to the Oregon Tech Owls 84-80 in the final game of the Raider Classic Friday night in Ashland, Ore.
Auble was 7 of 14 from behind the 3-point line, a career high in 3s made in a game for the junior from Valdez, Alaska.
As a team, the Lady Mustangs (1-2) shot 40% from the field as well as from beyond the arc, but they allowed the Owls to hit 35 of 70 (50%) from the field, including a 56-32 advantage in the paint.
"Tough loss tonight but these are the games that make us better," said TMU Head Coach Fonda Wilson. "Our girls came ready to play and Auble's shooting kept us in the game."
TMU took control of the first quarter when
Chloe Auble hit a 3-pointer 2:23 into the game to make it 5-2. They increased the lead to end the quarter up 15-10.
The Owls fought back in the second 10 minutes of play, cutting the Lady Mustangs' halftime lead to just a point at 31-30.
Master's opened up the third quarter like they did back in the first, this time wth a long-range bomb from
Abbie Mullins to stretch their lead to 40-32 with 6:37 to play in the frame. That lead grew to as much as 10 points when Auble again hit from deep.
But Oregon Tech closed out the third quarter on an 18-7 run, punctuated by a transition layup with 4 seconds in the period, to swing momentum back to the Owls.
The final quarter saw the teams battle and swing the momentum back and forth. With 58 seconds to play, the Owls' Tatum Schmerbach made a layup to tie the game at 74-74. The teams traded steals, forcing TMU to call a timeout with 24 seconds to play.
Coming out of the timeout, the ball found its way into
Alli VanKooten's hands, but her chance for the winning shot did not fall and the game went to overtime.
After trading scores and leads in the extra period, Oregon Tech opened up a 3-point lead with 26 seconds to go. VanKooten made a layup to draw to within a point, but missed shots forced the Lady Mustangs to foul and the Owls hit their free throws to close out the 4-point loss.
VanKooten finished with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for her second double-double in the team's first three games. Eight of her 16 boards came off the offensive glass, helping her team get 18 second-chance points.
"Alli V's rebounding was huge tonight," Coach Wilsoin said. "Lots of second chance points came from that. Madi (Brooks) came off the bench and gave us a spark and Bella (Forker's) defense was incredible. Road games are always hard but it's encouraging that we came out fighting for a full game plus OT.
The Master's will be back home on Thursday when they host the Oaks of Stanton University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
