Defensive masterclass lifts Lady Mustangs over Stanton

TMU women's basketball team hit the century mark in their 104-41 win over Stanton on Thursday night in The MacArthur Center.

TMU was also extremely active on defense, recording 30 steals and forcing 38 total Elk turnovers.

After TMU's trip to Oregon where they lost a pair of close games, the Lady Mustangs came out on fire in the first quarter, shooting over 63% from the field and 4 of 8 from downtown. They scored 35 points in the first quarter alone and held the Elks in check, as they scored just 10 points. The Lady Mustang defense remained sharp in the second quarter, again giving up just 10 points and heading into half time with a 58-20 lead.

The Master's kept the pressure on entering the third period, with their best defensive quarter of the season, holding the Elks to 14.29% shooting. After allowing just five points in the third quarter, TMU cruised to a 65-point win after a 27-point fourth quarter, in which they had seven steals. They had their largest lead of 70 points with 3:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"I was really impressed by our defense," TMU Head Coach Fonda Wilson said. "And not just our starters, our bench came in and got several stops that were huge."

TMU dominated the score sheet, scoring 46 points in the paint, 48 off turnovers and added 21 second-chance points. Chloe Auble led the squad with 19 points on an efficient 7 of 11 shooting. Leyna Gorauskas had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five steals. Bella Forker had 14 points and eight assists and also had five steals.

The Lady Mustangs will play next in the Northstar Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska against the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Saturday. Tip-off is 6 p.m. PT.
