Women’s Basketball takes tough loss from Warriors

The Master's University women's basketball team lost to Westmont College 87-72 in their away game at Santa Barbara, Calif. Thursday evening.

The Mustangs (3-3) trailed the Warriors for the entire game, never exchanging the lead with their former conference rivals.

TMU ended the first quarter with a 15-point split that became a 12-point deficit by the end of the second.

The Warriors extended their lead to 22 points by the end of the third quarter before the Mustangs cut the difference to 11 points with less than two minutes left in the game. But their fourth quarter surge was not enough to overtake the Warriors.

The Master's made 18 of 24 (75%) free throws and 6 of 17 (35.3%) three-pointers while Westmont made 8 of 11 (72.7%) of their free throws and 7 of 21 (33.3%) of their three-pointers.

But the Warriors took advantage inside the field, making 36 of 71 (50.7%) of their in-field shots while the Mustangs only made 24 of 64 (37.5%) of their shots.

Sophomore Nicole Chuang led the team with 16 points while sophomore Laney Grider made all three of her three-pointers to finish the game with 14 points. Seniors Marin Lenz and Lexi Hernandez were right behind the sophomores with 12 points each.

The Mustangs will return home and play against Westcliff University (CA) at the MacArthur Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
