Mustangs win big over Lion Angels

11/19/2024 8:27:00 PM

Box Score The Master's men's basketball team got scoring from 12 different players, with six of those players in double figures, in a 117-57 win over the Bethesda Lion Angels Tuesday night in The MacArthur Center.

The Mustangs (7-1) finished the night shooting 48 of 96 (50%) and forced 24 Bethesda turnovers that resulted in a Points off Turnover difference of 32-7.

It was the second time TMU scored over 100 points this season, and both times have been against the Lion Angels.

"It means a lot to get everybody in to play quality minutes," said TMU Head Coach Kelvin Starr. "I was happy with Caden DeVries and Rylan Starr. They both played really good minutes as freshman on both ends of the floor, particularly on the defensive end. Caden DeVries was a standout defensively."

The Master's finished the night shooting 16 of 43 (37%) from 3-point range, but it was the second half shooting that brought the percentage up. In the first 20 minutes of the game, the Mustangs only hit 2 of 17 from long-range, which means the second half numbers were 14 of 26 (54%).

The struggles in the first half were evident when Bethesda was able to stay with the Mustangs. With 7:11 to play in the first half, the Lion Angels made a pair of free throws to tie it at 17-17. But TMU would close out the final 7:11 on a 26-9 run to go into the locker room leading 42-26.

"We put an emphasis on the defensive end," Coach Starr said. "I said to them, if you give up a straight-line drive or an offensive rebound or you gamble and go for a steal, you're coming out, no matter who you are, starter, non-starter, whatever. And all of a sudden, the guys were in the game. They were working to stay in front, actually got stops and started to work in the flow of the game because it mattered to them to stay in front."

It worked. The Master's scored 75 points in the final half while holding Bethesda to just 31. In addition to the scoring, TMU had a 35-18 rebounding advantage in those final 20 minutes, with 16 of those rebounds being off the offensive glass that netted 20 second chance points.

Kaleb Lowery scored 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of work. Kendall Moore added 14, Tiago Soares 13, with 10 points each for Deaken Stangl and Quincy Phillips. And in just six minutes off the bench, Rylan Starr had a career-high 10 points.

The Master's will be on the road Monday when they travel to Fullerton to take on the La Sierra Golden Eagles in a tournament hosted by Hope International. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
