The Master's women's basketball team finished off the Freed-Hardeman Classic by losing to the host Lions 71-66 Saturday in Henderson, Tenn.
It was a tale of two quarters, the first two quarters in fact, that told the story. TMU (3-2) jumped out to a 21-10 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes, but FHU turned the tables in the second with a 23-12 advantage to go into the locker room tied 33-33.
The third quarter was tight with the Lions taking a 1-point lead into the final frame. And despite the Lady Mustangs hitting 7 of 13 from the floor in that final period, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, the Lions matched the 4 of 6 from deep and added another from the field to finish the quarter 8 of 15 to get the win.
"The girls worked hard tonight, but we came up just short," said TMU Head Coach Fonda Wilson. "We faced another great team and battled until the very end."
Both teams are receiving votes on the latest NAIA Top 25 poll.
For the game The Master's shot 24 of 47 (51%) from the field and landed 9 of 21 (43%) from downtown, while holding the Lions to under 39% from the field and 33% from deep. FHU did take a small advantage in rebounding (33-29), but a big advantage in offensive rebounds (13-4) which lead to a difference of 15-2 second chance points.
Lexi Hernandez led the team with 15 points and five rebounds.
Marin Lenz followed with 14 points and
Laney Grider added 10.
The Master's will be on the road Thursday when they face their old rival the Westmont Warriors in Santa Barbara. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
