The Mustangs buck the Buccaneers in 4-1 win

It was another hot day that soared over 100 degrees, but The Master's University women's soccer team did not feel that heat, as they defeated Park University Gilbert (AZ) 4-1 at Reese Field in Santa Clarita, Calif. Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs put up an offensive show with 22 shots and 12 shots on goal, which rivaled the seven shots and one shot on goal the Buccaneers had.

But Park Gilbert opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the game, as a Buccaneer outraced the Mustangs and whistled a shot into the net.

"[Park Gilbert], by far, have given us the hardest time in the beginning of the game." Women's soccer head coach Esteban Chavez said about the Buccaneers. "They press us very hard, they were on us, they were very motivated, they have good team chemistry… We played poor in the first 10-15 minutes but because they forced us to play poor, it wasn't us not working hard enough."

But that goal was the only chance the Buccaneers would get, as the Mustangs took control of the rest of the game.

Graduate student forward Bekah Micu would open and close the scoring for the Mustangs with two goals, the first of which arching over the Buccaneer goalkeeper from a kick way outside the penalty area.

"Today [Bekah has] been given a lot of opportunities… you get an opportunity, you do something with it." Coach Chavez said about the Clovis native. "It was not only her two goals but it was just her effort, her press, her work, her intensity that made a big difference for us."

Freshman forward Breanna Fajardo, who leads the team in goals, scored a goal less than a minute into the second half, while sophomore Harmony Rohde tallied a goal 10 minutes after Fajardo.

And with Micu's second goal, her third in two games, the Mustangs take the 4-1 win.

With their win against Park Gilbert, The Master's are able to hold on to their solo second position in the conference standings. But Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (AZ) looks to overtake the Mustangs.

"There are three nationally ranked teams in our conference, and the girls have already beaten two of them… [Embry-Riddle] being one of them… The girls are winning the games we're suppose to win… it puts us in a very good position. We want to win but we don't have that kind of pressure." Coach Chavez said about his team.

Luckily for the Mustangs, they do not have to wait for long, as they will travel to Prescott, Ariz. to play against the No.15 Embry-Riddle in Varsity Field on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.
