The Master's University women's soccer team took care of business with a 10-0 win against Benedictine University at Mesa (AZ) at Reese Field in Santa Clarita, Calif. Thursday afternoon.Â
Despite the 107-degree heat, the Mustangs stayed cool and applied the heat as they controlled the field for most of the game, recording a total of 41 shots over Benedictine's two shots.
Freshman defender Sasha Redshaw, junior forward Sinclair Francescon and freshman midfielder Kegan Brunnermann scored two goals in the game, with Redshaw and Francescon also recording assists.
Freshman defender Dakota Cabrera, sophomore forward Harmony Rohde, senior forward Mary Mobley and graduate student forward Bekah Micu scored a goal, while freshman forwards Breanna Fajardo and Leah Burke also added assists.
Despite their offensive onslaught, women's soccer head coach Esteban Chavez wanted his team to continually apply pressure on Benedictine, regardless of the score.
"We started off good in the sense that we were up 2-0 in the first six minutes of the game," Coach Chavez said after the game. "But unfortunately we got comfortable so we did not play well in the first half… we were forcing things, doing things that we shouldn't be doing in the game… Those can create bad habits so they fixed it in the second half."
But the two shots the Mustangs allowed in the first half were stopped by freshman forward Grace LaCroix, who took over as the goalkeeper to start the game.Â
"Grace played goalkeeper in high school, so she has a little bit of experience," coach Chavez said.
Despite the injuries and the heat, Coach Chavez was still happy with how the team played, saying, "They didn't give up a goal, had a lot of shots, scored goals and… not to plug out because what we had in front of us."
The last time the women's soccer team scored 10 or more goals was in 2009, where they won 14-0 against the Southwestern Firestorm (AZ), which became Arizona Christian University.
And with their third straight win, the Mustangs moved into second in the conference standings and are now receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
"The girls put themselves in a really good situation… They are receiving votes now for the Top-25. If we do what we are supposed to do on Saturday, rankings come out next Wednesday and we should be in a good situation." Coach Chavez said.
But before the poll is released, the women's soccer team will play against Park University Gilbert (AZ) on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Reese Field in Santa Clarita, Calif. at 11Â a.m.
