Make it one-for-one in the new season.
The Mustangs hit 52% of their field goals on their way to an opening night 109-23 win over the Bethesda Lion Angels Thursday night in front of a capacity crowd in The MacArthur Center.
TMU (1-0) hit 42 of 81 shots from the field, including 16 of 41 (29%) from 3-point range, while holding Bethesda to 4 of 48 (8%) from the field.
"So the goal was to be disciplined in what we do and trust the process," said TMU Head Coach Kelvin Starr. "In the past, in games like this, we've become sloppy and undisciplined. And I felt like tonight there was a real effort the whole game staying to what we do defensively. So I was really happy with that."
The Master's opened up the game on a 7-0 run, giving the standing-room-only crowd an indication of things to come. After the Lion Angels got to within six with 14 minutes to play in the half, the Mustangs went on a 17-0 run, shutting out BUC for over eight minutes, to go up 28-5
TMU held Bethesda to 11 points in the first half, going to the locker room up 48-11.
The second half was more of the first... emphasis on more. The Lion Angels were held to just 12 points in the half while the Mustangs scored 61.
Six different players scored in double digits for TMU, led by
Kaleb Lowery scoring a game-high 20 points and pulling down 16 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Quincy Phillips had 18,
Tiago Soares tied his career high with 13,
Jaren Nafarrete achieved a career high with 11, and both
Kendall Moore and
Deaken Stangl each netted 10.
"That's a testament to our team," Coach Starr said. "We have a team that has really good chemistry, and I think we're going to have that balanced scoring this year."
The Master's will be back in The MacArthur Center Saturday night when they take on NCAA DII Azusa Pacific in an exhibition game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
