It wasn't easy, but TMU gets win over Hope

The Master's women's volleyball team had to battle and come-from-behind, but the team was able to get a three-set 27-25, 28-26, 25-18 win over the Hope International Royals Saturday night in The MacArthur Center.

In each of the first two sets, the Lady Mustangs (12-7, 2-3 GSAC) trailed by as much as eight points, only to rally, erase the deficit and get the set win.

It was the team's second GSAC win and third win in a row.

"It's never awesome to be down by eight," laughed TMU Head Coach Annett Davis. "But I am proud of the fact that we got ourselves out of the hole that we dug for ourselves. The girls were making some good choices, we just had some unforced errors. Once we cleaned those up, we started playing more of our game."

In the first set, TMU trailed 20-12. But six straight points, and 11 of the next 12, gave the Lady Mustangs a 24-22 lead. The Royals would not rollover, tying the game at 25-25 before Faith Tarver came up with two kills to finish off the set in favor of TMU.

Then in the second set, HIU jumped out to a 13-5 lead, only to see the advantage once again vanish as The Master's went on a 16-4 run to take a 21-17 lead. Once again the Royals battled, taking a 26-25 lead. But TMU scored the next three, including two aces, to win the set.

The Master's controlled the tempo and emotion in the final set, leading by as much as nine before getting the seven-point win.

TMU was led by Ruby Duncan with 21 kills, with Faith Tarver getting 12 and Cora Machado adding eight. Machado also had six blocks, including two solos, while Sierra Hale had a game-high 17 digs. Timberlie Miller had 43 assists in the three sets, an average of 14.3 assists per set. Her game-high six aces raised her season average to 0.76 services aces per set, which is No. 1 in the NAIA.

"Both of our outside hitters did a great job digging and hitting today," Davis said. "And Timberlie made some great choices setting and helped us out tremendously with her tough serve."

The Master's will spend next weekend in Northern California as they will face Menlo College on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by Jessup at 2 p.m.
