Mustangs Tie Bobcats

The Master's men's soccer team controlled the tempo through most of the match, but the scoreboard showed a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes of play against the UC Merced Bobcats Saturday at Reese Field.

The Bobcats, receiving votes for the NAIA Top 25, have not lost a regular season game since August of last season, going undefeated in Cal Pac Conference play. They came into Saturday's match 2-0-1, having defeated Jessup and Hope International, and tying Menlo.

The Mustangs (1-0-1) out-shot UCM 20-7, with 11 of those 20 shots on goal. In the two games played so far this season, TMU has out-shot their opponents 39-13.

"Really happy about out-shooting them severely," said Head Coach Jim Rickard. "That's a really good thing. Obviously we need to be finishing, but it is definitely a complete reversal of last year."

The Bobcats Ashton Escamilla was able to hit the back of the net with just two seconds to play in the first half to give UCM a 1-0 need at the half. It was the only shot on goal Merced had in the half.

But in the 55th minute, Kai Terentieff scored the equalizer after a Prince Chingancheke shot rebounded off the Bobcats goalkeeper out to Terentieff's foot for the goal. It was the sophomore's fourth goal of the season after earning the hat trick in Thursday's season opener.

Both teams had chances late, with the Bobcats clanking one off the crossbar and the Mustangs pounding one into the post.

"I feel like my defense is clicking more and more," Rickard said. "And I would like our forwards to be a little more technical. The word I use with them is dynamic. UC Merced's goal was a very dynamic goal, and I think we do that at times but we aren't doing that as much as we should be doing it. But I think (Saturday's game) was a very gutsy performance."

The Master's will next be on the road Wednesday when they take on NCAA Division 3 Occidental. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
