A penalty kick and a late second half goal were the difference as The Master's men's soccer team lost to the Occidental Tigers 3-1 Wednesday in Eagle Rock, Calif.
It was the first loss of the season for the Mustangs.
"Occidental was better and punished us for the mistakes we made," said Head Coach Jim Rickard. "We seemed out of sorts and lacking confidence and under a lot of pressure. We broke pressure but not consistently and they got the momentum and finished a late goal to separate from us for victory."
Kai Terentieff scored with just 3:04 into the match, off an assist by Giorgio Martini and Alexis Garcia, to give TMU a quick 1-0 lead.Â
For Terentieff it was his fifth goal in the first three games this season.
But the Mustangs (1-1-1) could not stop the Oxy attack that scored two before the end of the half and a third in the 82nd minute.
The offenses were fairly even in the first half, with the Tigers gaining a slight advantage in shots (9-7). That advantage gained intensity in the second half with TMU falling behind (9-4), giving Oxy the 18-11 edge in shots.
Six different Mustangs took at least one shot, with Prince Chingancheke taking three with one on goal. Terentieff's two shots were both on goal with the one finding the net. Goalkeeper Kian Bensend finished with five saves.
The Master's will return home Saturday for a 4 p.m. match against Stanton University on Reese Field. Coach Rickard knows it's a chance to get the team back on track.
"We'll refocus for Saturday's game."
