Terentieff's hat trick lifts TMU to season-opening win

Sophomore Kai Terentieff scored the first three goals and Caden Zierenberg added another late as The Master's men's soccer team won their season opener 4-0 over the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds Thursday at Reese Field.

Terentieff, who scored one goal all season last year, picked up his first goal in the 37th minute off an assist by Zierenberg. He then added his second in the 54th minute, followed by his third goal of the game 13 minutes later.

Zierenberg and Tyrik Trotman picked up an assist on the second goal, while Trent Rickard got his first collegiate assist on Terentief''s third goal.

In the 79th minute, Zierenberg scored his goal off another Rickard assist, sealing the win over the NCAA Division 2 team.

"Super excited first and foremost for Kai. That hat trick was the first we've had around here in a while," said TMU Head Coach Jim Rickard. "I thought my midfield was very good today, the back line was very organized and composed, and we scored some goals. We have a lot more speed and a lot more scoring potential than we've had in recent years."

After the first 10 minutes or so of enduring the Sunbirds' pressure, the Mustangs (1-0) took control and never relinquished it. TMU had 19 shots in the game with 16 on goal, FPU could only muster three shots in each half, and only three of those were on goal.

"They (FPU) came out ready to go and hot," Rickard said. "Their wingers were kind of hurting us a little bit, but Matt (Picht) and Caden (Deck) did a really good job of containing them. And there's an awful lot of confidence in (goalkeeper Kian Bensend). He had three saves, but his presence back there and communication is really important."

The Mustangs will get a day of rest before they strap on their boots and head back to the pitch. TMU hosts UC Merced, a team that went 12-3-5 overall last season and went undefeated in the Cal Pac Conference. The match starts at 1 p.m. Saturday on Reese Field.
