The bats woke up from a brief winter slumber as The Master's baseball team unleashed 18 hits and scored 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Providence Christian Tuesday at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
Game 1
Evan Banks (10),
Austin Young (14) and
Miles Henderson (3) each hit home runs to lead the Mustangs past the Sea Beggars 9-3.
Young's 14 home runs on the season leads the GSAC and is tied for fourth in the nation.
Things did not start well for TMU as Providence scored three runs in the top of the first inning. But the Mustangs (21-10, 7-8 GSAC) tied the score at 3-3 with Banks' 3-run blast.
The Master's added three more in the second when a
Will Batz groundout scored
Jackson Beck to give TMU the lead. Young would then double to left-center to score
Tyler Grodell, which was followed by a
Ryan Mathiesen single to left to score
Owen Payn.
The Mustangs tacked three more in the fourth inning when Young hit his solo home run followed by Henderson's two-run blast.
Ethan Schmidt got the start and went 1.0 inning, giving up the three earned runs on two hits and a hit batter. He was followed by Jojo Penberthy going 4.0 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four to earn the win.
Cade Walker and
Nelson Schutte each followed with an inning apiece.
Game 2
The Master's wasted little time in exerting themselves, posting four runs in the bottom of the first and adding four more in the bottom of the third on their way to a 13-4 win.
This time there were no big flies, just clutch at bats with men in scoring position.
A Banks groundout to third scored
Will Batz, a
Ty Beck single scored Young, a
Miles Henderson double scored Beck and a
Davis Beavers single scored
Ryan Mathiesen. That was just the first inning.
After giving up a run in the top of the third, the Mustangs responded with four more in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a Grodell double to left-center to score Payn and Henderson.
The Sea Beggars halved the score at 8-4 in the top of the fifth, but once again TMU responded getting two more in the bottom half, followed by another three in the sixth.
Michael Chung got the start, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing only one hit. He was followed by
Mason Madalinski,
William Gilbert,
Trevor Hoff and
Adler Stout.
The Master's home stand continues on Friday when they welcome the Menlo Oaks to Lou Herwaldt Stadium Friday at 2 p.m. to start a three-game GSAC series.
