Sandy Stangs Get Win Over Royals

The Master's beach volleyball team, ranked No. 9 in the most recent NAIA Top 10 poll, beat the visiting Hope International Royals Tuesday 3-2 at the TMU Beach Volleyball Courts.

The match had been originally scheduled last Friday but was postponed to Tuesday because of the weather.

The Sandy Stangs (4-3) got wins from their Nos. 3, 4 and 5 teams to secure the team match win. Chloe Johnson/Zoe Kira won 10-21, 21-17, 15-11; Breanna Brooks/Ellie Niehus also needed three sets to win 17-21, 21-18, 15-13; Isabela Rodriguez/Ellie Unruh won their match 21-18, 21-14.

Despite the win, Head Coach Annett Davis felt the team didn't play to its capability.

"It was a little rough," Davis said. "We weren't on our A game. All of our teams, with the exception of our 5s, all lost the first set. But on a good note, our 3s and 4s were able to stay positive and raise their level of play. Every set they got better."

In the order of finish, the match was tied 2-2 with the last team playing the No. 3 team. TMU's Johnson and Kira defeated Hope's Koffroth and Perez 15-11 in that final set to give The Master's the team victory.

"Any day that we come out, I do expect us to play at a certain level," Coach Davis said. "Today we did not play at that level. So it's encouraging to know that if we do play to our capability, we will have better results."

The Master's will be back in action this Friday as they take on Arizona Christian at the Magnolia Street Beach Courts in Huntington Beach, Calif. First serve is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
