The Master's beach volleyball hosted both the
Westcliff Warriors and the Cal State-LA Golden Eagles Friday in season-opening matches, losing 3-2 to the Warriors and winning 4-1 over the Golden Eagles.
In the first match against No. 3 Westcliff, the Beach Stangs got wins from the team of Breanna Brooks/Eleana Niehus (21-19, 21-12) and Isabella Rodriguez/
Ellie Unruh (19-21, 21-14, 16-14).
"For us to lose 3-2, that was huge," said Head Coach
Annett Davis. "I didn't know how we were going to pair up against them, so that was a strong showing."
In the afternoon match against Cal State-LA, two teams had to play three sets before getting the win. The team of
Kassidy Wilson/Violet Avila won 15-21, 21-17, 15-10, with Isabela Rodriguez/
Ellie Unruh winning 21-17, 20-22, 15-4.
Chloe Johnson/Faith Tarver (21-10, 21-19) and Breanna Brooks/Eleana Niehus (21-13, 21-18) got the wins in their matches.
"For our first showing, I think we did a really good job today," Davis said. "I was really proud of the girls. A lot of the things we practiced came out in our games. They worked really hard and they fought when they were down. So it was great seeing them mentally push through those things."
Paying attention to the details from the first match against Westcliff paid dividends against Cal State-LA.
"As the day went on our girls got a little better," Davis said. "Fixing things that in (the first match) they struggled with, and recognizing what those little things were that they needed to tweak on each team, was vital for them to win."
The Master's will travel to Arizona next weekend to play four GSAC matches at Victory Lane Sports Park in Glendale, Ariz.
