The Master's women's soccer team was able to score first, but the next two goals belonged to the Bobcats of RV St. Thomas University as the Mustangs lost for the second time this season 2-1 Thursday in Florida.
Â
The game-winner came in the 70
th minute when Mustang goalkeeper
Autumn Jensen knocked away a St. Thomas shot, only for the ball to come out to the Bobcats Karina Medina who fired the ball into the upper left corner of the net.
Â
St. Thomas outshot The Master's 19-14, but it was the Mustangs (0-2-1)Â that had the better opportunities with a 10-9 difference in shots on goal.
Â
"We are handling pressure better and moving the ball," said Head Coach
Curtis Lewis after what was a hot and humid game. "We outplayed them in the first half and the second half I think we were even. Now it's about focusing on the opportunities given and putting the ball in the back of the net."
Â
The scoring began in the 30
th minute when
Ellie Radmilovich intercepted a clearing attempt by St Thomas and sent a 25-yard pass over the top to the right foot of
Jordyn Bingaman who popped it over goalkeeper Isabella Penaranda for the score. It was the first goal of the season for the Mustangs.
Â
St. Thomas then countered nine minutes later when a pass to Megan Velazquez, who just stayed onside between defenders, allowed her to get a shot past the diving Jensen to the lower right of the net to even the score at 1-1.
Â
"That was a breakdown for us defensively," Lewis said. "We all needed to step up together there and we just didn't. We talked about it later and they understood where the breakdown happened. But give (St. Thomas) credit. They scored two quality goals using the great speed they have. For us, this is a good result seeing we are a young team. We need to go against teams like this to get better and we are."
Â
Jensen finished with seven saves while 11 different Mustangs were able to get shots off.
Â
The third and final game of this Florida trip will be Saturday when The Master's travel to West Palm Beach to take on #6 Keiser. Game time is 12 p.m. PDT.
Â
"Keiser is a beast," Lewis said. "So we need to stay organized and be wise how we manage the game and look to build off what we have done these last two games. We're going in the right direction."
