Women's Soccer Settles for Tie Against Hawks

With just four games remaining in the regular season and needing points to make it to the conference tournament, Master's women's soccer came from behind to tie the San Diego Christian Hawks 1-1 Thursday in San Diego.

Coming into today's matches, Master's (3-7-3, 1-2-2 GSAC) was two points behind Hope International for the sixth and final spot in the GSAC post-season tournament. The tie gets the Lady Mustangs one point closer, but still needing wins.

"Obviously we wanted to win today," Head Coach Curtis Lewis said. "If you can get points on the road and win at home, you have to be pleased. If we didn't get any points today we are probably out of the playoffs."

The Hawks got on the board just six minutes into the match when Isabella Coronado punched a shot over Master's goalkeeper Autumn Jensen from the left corner of the box into the right side of the net. For the remainder of the half, however, it was the Lady Mustangs who turned up the offensive pressure, out shooting the Hawks 7-4 in the half.

That pressure was turned up by Master's in the second half with nine total shots against just six by SDCC. After a red card was issued to San Diego Christian's Alma Carroll inside the box, Brandi Meyer lined up for the penalty kick and put it in the lower right corner of the net to tie the game at one. It was the junior defender's first goal of the season and second of her career.

"I thought we came out very lackadaisical and played inconsistent in the first half," Lewis said. "In the second half we came out and played more like who we are."

The Lady Mustangs best chance to steal a win came in the 82nd minute when Ellie Radmilovich worked her way around the left flank after a corner kick and fired a shot from about 25 yards out that clanked off the crossbar. It was the closest Master's got to come away with a much-needed road win.

"(Goalkeeper) Autumn (Jensen) played well today and managed the game well," Lewis said of his goalkeeper who finished with five saves. "I thought some of our freshman played well -- Addy (Wolf) and Sinclair (Francescon) were really good for us today."

Master's will play their final road match of the season this Saturday when they travel to Costa Mesa to take on Vanguard. Kickoff is set for noon.
