Mustangs Tie Lions in Women's Soccer

As the regular season draws down to its final week, points are beginning to matter.

And Master's got one point as they traveled to Costa Mesa to settle for a 0-0 tie with the Vanguard Lions Saturday.

Vanguard has always been a difficult place to play for Master's, so to earn the tie is just fine for Head Coach Curtis Lewis.

"A good back-and-forth battle with a quality Vanguard team," he said. "More points on the road is really impressive from our young team and the results from today put us in the last playoff spot with two games to go."

Vanguard had the most shots with nine compared to the Lady Mustangs six, but it might very well have been the play of freshman goalkeeper Autumn Jensen that helped earn that precious one point. Jensen had five saves on those nine shots, but none bigger than the save in the closing moments of the match after a shot hit the post then came back to a Vanguard player who headed it into the arms of Jensen

"Not a huge amount of opportunities for either team, but each team looked dangerous at different times of the game," Lewis said. "In the second half we really pushed the game, and then Vanguard came close to winning it at the end."

Now Master's will look to solidify their spot in the post-season as they will be home for the final two matches of the season. Thursday Menlo will come to Reese Field for a 12:30 start, and then on Saturday it will be William Jessup at 11 a.m. when the Lady Mustangs will also honor their seniors.

"We seem to play much better at home, so this hopefully will lead to some more points next week."
