TMU Women's Volleyball came out swinging on Friday night against Occidental College, sweeping the Tigers 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) in the Mustangs' home opener.
Â
"What an amazing first home game," Master's Head Coach
Annett Davis said. "The girls came out with their game faces and were determined to win."
Â
Occidental scored the first point of the match, but Master's responded with nine-straight points, punctuated by a
Ruby Duncan and
Emily Clark block. The Mustangs extended their lead to as many as 13 after back-to-back service aces from Duncan before ultimately winning the set by nine.
Â
TMU ran out of the starting gates quickly in the second set as well, commanding a 10-2 advantage after consecutive kills from
Emilye Grace Williams. Another pair of kills by Williams extended the Mustangs' advantage to 15-4.
Â
The Tigers fought back with seven-straight points to get to within four and then later three, only for Master's to close out the set by five and put Occidental on the brink.
Â
The third set was the most competitive of all, with the visitors leading by as many as four points. The set was tied at 19-19 when TMU scored the final six points of the match to clinch the victory.
Â
"Overall I am very pleased with our play," Davis said. "We met most of the goals that we set out to accomplish that match."
Â
Leading the Mustang attack was Williams with 11 kills.
Â
"
Emilye Grace Williams offensively had one of her strongest showings of the season," Davis said. "In order for us to win more often we need her senior leadership."
Â
Duncan contributed three service aces and three blocks, while
Faith Tarver had seven kills and 13 digs. Setter
Natalie Collins dished out 24 assists overall.
Â
Master's returns to The MacArthur Center within 24 hours when the Mustangs are set to take on Marymount California University. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
