After OUAZ held TMU Baseball to three runs in Friday's doubleheader, the Mustang bats erupted for 22 runs on Saturday. Unfortunately for Master's, all 22 of those runs came in the first of two games, as TMU was forced to settle for a Golden State Athletic Conference series split with Ottawa University Arizona.
Â
The offensive explosion marks the third time Master's has scored 20+ runs in a game this season.
Â
"Today was impressive offensively," Master's head coach
Monte Brooks said of the Mustangs' first-game output. "We did some really good things this weekend."
Â
Roy Verdejo,
Miles Henderson and
Joe Terlizzi were the stars, as the trio combined to knock in 16 of the team's 22 runs, with all three hitting two doubles each. Verdejo led the charge, batting 4-for-7 with a home run and six RBIs. Henderson (4-for-6) also tallied six RBIs, while Terlizzi was a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs.
Â
Will Batz knocked in two runs himself, while
Nolan Inouye tacked on an RBI of his own, as TMU also scored on three passed balls.
Â
The Mustangs scored in seven of nine innings, including multiple runs in six of those. TMU got off to a fast start with a five-spot in the top of the first and reached double figures in the third. After going scoreless in the fourth and fifth, Master's added 12 runs over the final four innings to put the game out of reach.
Â
The impressive offensive showing could not be carried over into the nightcap, however, as the Spirit shutout the Mustangs for the second time in the series. OUAZ limited Master's to a single hit by Terlizzi in the third inning.
Â
TMU could not find any run support for
Alec Akins, who pitched a quality outing going six innings, while giving up only three runs (two earned) and striking out three.
Â
"Alec threw a pretty good game," Brooks said. "We hit some balls well, but they were right at them, so we just couldn't score. That pitcher is legit and he threw very well under the lights. He's a hard thrower and has a good slider."
Â
Master's (24-16 overall, 5-7 GSAC) is scheduled to host Bethesda in a three-game series beginning on April 16, before concluding its GSAC season with a four-game set against Arizona Christian (28-19, 3-5) on April 23-24 inside Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
Â
With four conference games remaining, TMU sits three games behind OUAZ (19-18, 8-4) in the GSAC East standings.
