In a match that could have gone either way, TMU Women's Volleyball lost to Ottawa University Arizona, 1-4, with the scores closer than the three-point differential would indicate. Of the four individual pairings that OUAZ won, three were taken after three sets, with one being by injury default.
"Despite the loss, we had some solid performances today," Master's head coach
Annett Davis said.
Number two pairing
Kasie Spencer and
Hannah Douglas won its first set, 21-19, before saving a set point to tie up the second set, 20-20. However, the Spirit duo won the next two points and rode that momentum to claim the third set as well, 15-11.
"Our twos lost in three but played one of their best matches of the season against one of the toughest teams they have encountered this year," Davis said.
The Mustangs were seemingly on the verge of tying the match when the Mustangs' fourth duo of
Gwen Garate and
Caihannah-Jane Catabona were leading 24-22, 15-21, 10-8. In unfortunate circumstances though, TMU was forced to retire from the match due to injury.
Master's claimed its first and only team point with number one pairing
Desi Brown and
Katie Emmerling winning in straight sets: 21-15, 21-18.
"Our ones took care of business by being disciplined and efficient," Davis said.
At number two, OUAZ was able to clinch the match with a victory over
Chloe Johnson and
Tara Delk: 21-13, 21-16.
Then at number five,
Alicia Castillo and
Kylie Clouse won their first set, 21-19, before dropping a close second set, 22-24. The Spirit then took the third, 15-7.
"In the fives spot, we had a new pairing that played very well, taking its opponent to three sets," Davis said. "Alicia is coming along as a beach player, which she had not ever played before this season. Her ball control and knowledge of the game improves weekly."
Master's (3-3 overall, 3-3 GSAC) is now scheduled to begin the non-conference portion of its schedule before returning to GSAC play later this month. The Mustangs are set to take on three NCAA Division I teams and one NCAA Division II squad next weekend, beginning with matches against CSUN and Concordia University Irvine in Northridge on Friday.
