TMU Beach Volleyball takes down Firestorm

3/5/2021 6:58:00 PM

The weather on Friday resembled exactly what the TMU Beach Volleyball team envisioned what playing at home would be like when it had newly renovated courts installed.

"It was a picturesque day in the sand today compared to the windy event a couple weeks ago," Master's head coach Annett Davis said in reference to the first time the Mustangs played at the TMU Beach Volleyball Complex in competitive matches on Feb. 20. "Our team was excited and ready to play."

Along with the weather, the Mustangs' play on the court was also up to standard, as TMU defeated Arizona Christian, 3-2, in Golden State Athletic Conference action.

"Our one, three and four pairings had solid performances, as they stuck to their game plans for the win," Davis said.

The Mustangs began the day with their number four duo of Gwen Garate and Caihannah-Jane Catabona defeating their Firestorm counterpart: 21-15, 21-12. At number two, Hannah Douglas and Kasie Spencer battled back from dropping the first set to win the second, but ultimately fell in three: 15-21, 21-13, 11-15.

With the match tied at 1-1 after the first round of matches, ACU took the lead by defeating Alicia Castillo and Kylie Clouse in straight sets at number five.

However, Master's responded by winning the final two matches to finish, defeating ACU for the second time this season.

Number-one pairing Katie Emmerling and Desi Brown dominated its first set, 21-11, before rolling in the second, 21-15. TMU's number-three duo of Tara Delk and Chloe Johnson followed that up with a 21-15, 21-12 victory to clinch the match for the Mustangs.

"The pairings on ACU were a bit different this time, so it was almost like our girls were playing them for the first time," Davis said. "I was happy with our overall performances and we are looking forward to our match against OUAZ tomorrow."

Master's (3-2 overall, 3-2 GSAC) will host Ottawa University Arizona (3-1, 3-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m. OUAZ narrowly defeated TMU, 3-2, in their first showdown of the season on Feb. 12 in Glendale, Arizona.
