TMU Baseball scored 25 runs in game one, tying the program's single-game home run record with seven, as Master's swept a doubleheader with William Jessup on Friday to take the four-game series, three-games-to-one.
Â
"What a joy to see us swing it, especially after they came back," Master's head coach
Monte Brooks said. "We had some timely hitting and executed better.''
Â
The first game took over four hours with the two teams combining for 39 runs, as TMU claimed a 25-14 victory.
Â
Roy Verdejo hit a three-run shot in the top of the first to get the Mustangs' offense going. After William Jessup got one back in the bottom of the first, Master's scored nine runs in the top of the third.
Nick Tuttle,
Joe Terlizzi and
Brock Bell all homered in that inning, combining for seven RBIs on those three long balls.
Â
The big third inning gave TMU a 12-1 lead, only for William Jessup to get back into it with eight runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. However, the Mustangs scored a combined 13 runs in innings five through eight, including seven in the eighth, to run away with the game.
Â
Terlizzi and Verdejo each hit their second home runs of the ballgame in the sixth and seventh innings respectively, as both recorded three hits and six RBIs apiece in Friday's first game.
Will Batz joined the long ball parade in the top of the eighth with a grand slam.
Â
Master's came out of the second game victorious as well, 7-3, to sweep Friday's doubleheader and win the series, 3-1.
Â
"The second game was really a great baseball game," Brooks said. "We made plays and executed. It was a very tight game until the seventh when we got a couple extra runs with clutch hitting."
Â
Miles Henderson got the Mustangs on the board with an RBI single in the second. Then in the fourth, Terlizzi hit his third homer of the day before a Bell RBI-double extended TMU's lead to three.
Â
A William Jessup home run in the bottom of the fourth brought the Warriors to within one, 3-2, but Master's responded with four runs in the top of the seventh to add some insurance. A Batz RBI-single, Terlizzi 2-RBI double and a
Jeremiah Farris RBI-bunt put the Mustangs ahead by five, which was more than enough run support, as TMU won by four.
Â
With three RBIs in the second game, Terlizzi finished with nine RBIs on Saturday.
Â
"We had a couple good pitching performances, but offensively we had some outstanding at-bats," Brooks said. "I'm thrilled with the way we played on the road against a good club."
Â
Alec Akins pitched a seven-inning complete game, his second in his past three starts, giving up three runs while striking out six batters. The senior improved to 4-1 on the season.
Â
"Alec threw a three-hitter," Brooks said. "It was fun to finish with a good outing from Alec."
Â
Master's (20-14 overall, 3-5 GSAC) returns to Lou Herwaldt Stadium on Tuesday to take on Bethesda University in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
