Mustangs' number-one pairing takes down CSUN, Colorado Mesa

3/22/2021 8:55:00 PM

Desi Brown and Katie Emmerling continued their impressive season on the sand, improving to 12-2 overall as a pairing, after claiming victories against CSUN and Colorado Mesa University. However, The Master's University beach volleyball team dropped both matches by identical 4-1 scorelines on Monday in Northridge.

"Our girls played with more new lineups today," Master's head coach Annett Davis said. "It takes a lot of flexibility in order to do that and they took on the challenge."

In the morning match against CSUN, Emmerling and Brown defeated the Matadors' top pairing for the second time this season and for their fifth victory this year over an NCAA Division I opponent. After dropping the first set, 19-21, the Mustangs' number one duo bounced back to win the second and third sets by scores of 21-19 and 15-12.

CSUN won the four other matches in straight sets, although Caihannah-Jane Catabona and Hannah Wood scored 19 points in the second set of their loss at number four. Chloe Johnson and Tara Delk scored 18 points in the first set of their defeat at number two.

Then in the afternoon against Colorado Mesa, an NCAA Division II team, Emmerling and Brown won again, this time in straight sets: 25-23, 21-19. The Mavericks swept the other four matches, but Kasie Spencer and Kylie Clouse came the closest to turning the tides in their match at number three, falling by set scores of 21-19, 22-20.

"Kasie Spencer and Kylie Clouse teamed up for the first time and made great strides as a team today," Davis said.

Johnson and Delk narrowly lost their first set against CMU, 23-21, before also losing the second one.

Master's returns to Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday to take on Vanguard and Hope International in Huntington Beach.

"I am looking forward to having some of the new pairings practice this week to gel together," Davis said.
