A cohesive defensive display resulted in a 0-0 draw after two overtime periods for The Master's University men's soccer team again William Jessup University on Wednesday afternoon in Rocklin.
Â
"We had a good tactical plan that helped us focus and stay on page with each other," Master's head coach
Jim Rickard said. "I'm proud of their effort, work rate and togetherness."
Â
The Mustangs outshot the Warriors 6-3 in the first half and 9-8 overall in regulation.
Aidan Rohde,
Theo Kudlo and
Paul Kopp all registered shots on target, but TMU was unable to find the back of the net.
Â
"We had some quality chances but just couldn't get on the end of it," Rickard said. "
Giorgio Martino hit two perfect crosses that we couldn't finish and we had some open shots that just didn't find the right spot."
Â
In extra time, Master's had what Rickard said was the Mustangs' best chance of the game.
Â
"Our most dangerous chance happened early in overtime where they turned the ball over near the top of the box and we had numbers," Rickard said. "But we didn't attack quickly enough and got turned back in the box."
Â
William Jessup recorded the only two shots of extra time, as neither team was able to break the deadlock in either 10-minute overtime period.
Kian Bensend earned a shutout in goal in his first-career start for the Mustangs, tallying two saves.
Â
"I think the biggest thing was we didn't let their No. 10 run at us with the ball," Rickard said. "He is very good at dribble penetration, distribution and finishing."
Â
Overall, Rickard is pleased with his team's display on the road.
Â
"Our possession after winning the ball was solid for the most part today," Rickard said. "We just have to find a way to create high-quality chances and score some goals."
Â
Master's (1-5-2 overall, 0-4-1 GSAC) returns to Reese Field for its final three conference games, beginning on March 24 against Ottawa University Arizona (5-2, 3-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
