Katie Emmerling and
Desi Brown added two more wins against NCAA Division I opposition to their resume on Saturday, picking up victories over CSU Bakersfield's and Cal Poly's number one duos. Overall, Master's lost both matches by a 1-4 margin.
"Today was another challenge, but our girls played better as a whole, taking the notes from yesterday and putting them into practice," Master's head coach
Annett Davis said.
Against CSUB, TMU's top pairing of Emmerling and Brown defeated its Roadrunner counterpart in consecutive sets: 21-19, 21-15. Then against its Mustangs' namesake, the senior duo was leading 8-3 in the first set before a Cal Poly injury awarded the victory to Master's.
On the weekend, Emmerling and Brown picked up three victories against NCAA Division I teams and one against an NCAA Division II opponent. The Mustangs' top pairing improved to 9-1 on the season overall and extended its win streak to seven.
"Our one's team continued to shine and surprise their opponents with their stellar play," Davis said.
In the morning match against CSU Bakersfield, TMU's number two (
Kasie Spencer,
Hannah Douglas) and number four (
Gwen Garate,
Anna Poole) teams scored double-digit points in both sets of their straight-set defeats.
Douglas and Spencer repeated the feat in the afternoon match against Cal Poly, which is ranked sixth in the latest AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll.
Master's will continue its tough non-conference schedule on March 20, when the Mustangs host two NCAA Division I teams – University of Utah and Loyola Marymount University. The Mustangs are scheduled to take on the Utes at 9 a.m. before facing off with the Lions at 1 p.m.
"Overall, we consider this weekend an invaluable learning experience," Davis said. "You can't learn to beat the best if you don't play them."
