Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Tim Heiduk, Assistant Athletic Director, Events and Communications

Second-chance points lead TMU men's basketball to victory over Bethesda

The Master's University men's basketball team never trailed on Monday night inside The MacArthur Center, as the Mustangs won their fourth-straight game by at least 16 points, defeating Bethesda 86-68.

Keying TMU's victory was a 50-32 rebounding advantage, including 15-6 on the offensive boards, resulting in a 28-4 margin in second-chance points.

"Thomas Lowery and Gavin DeJong were great on the offensive glass, giving us extra possessions," Master's head coach Kelvin Starr said. "They had seven offensive rebounds in the first half, which was big, especially when we were shooting poorly. We still found a way to take care of business which was good."

Gavin DeJong led Master's with a career-high 19 points, while also contributing 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Thomas Lowery's nine rebounds set a new career-best mark.

Three other Mustangs reached double figures in scoring, all freshmen, in Davian Brown (16 points, five assists), Kaleb Lowery (14 points, seven rebounds) and Caden Starr (10 points, six assists).

"I thought our freshmen did pretty well tonight," Kelvin Starr said. "Any time you have 20 assists, that's pretty good."

Kelvin Starr also credited Ryan Beddeo, Thomas Lowery and DeJong for slowing down the Flames' top scorer.

TMU has a quick turnaround, facing off against West Coast Baptist in Lancaster on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

"The whole focus right now is trying to get better every game," Kelvin Starr said. "Tomorrow night we play against West Coast Baptist and just want to get better, then let the result take care of itself."
