TMU Women's Basketball found itself tied with La Sierra University after one quarter of play, but exploded for a combined 50 points across the second and third quarters, as the Mustangs ultimately cruised to a 69-38 home victory on Saturday night.
Â
"It was a slow start for us today," Master's Head Coach
Lisa Zamroz said. "We came out sluggish in the first quarter, then
Katelyn Saulog came in and ignited a fire in the second quarter. Her energy off the bench got us back on track and we didn't look back."
Â
Saulog scored 11 points, five in the second and six in the third, after making three 3-pointers. She was one of three Mustangs to score in double figures, along with
Allyson Pettit (15 points, 4 3-pointers) and
Stephanie Soares (18 points).
Â
Pettit (six assists), Saulog (five assists) and Soares (five assists) helped keep the ball moving for the Mustangs, who as a team tallied assists on 25 of 29 made field goals.
Â
"I was really proud of how well we shared the ball tonight," Zamroz said. "It was a great team win for us. I love to see everyone standing up cheering for one another on the bench. It's great to look over and see us celebrating each other's success."
Â
Soares continued to find her groove as the 2021-22 season continues.
Â
"Stephanie had a solid showing this week putting up a double-double in both games," Zamroz said. "We need her on the stat sheet, but her ability to get others involved in the offense really propels us. It's encouraging to see her get her feel for in-game competition back only a few games into the season."
Â
TMU (2-0 overall) led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs forced 24 turnovers, scoring 23 points off those. Saulog led the team with five steals, with Soares pitching in four of her own.
Â
Soares and
Madeline Cooke each recorded three blocks each, as Master's won the battle in the post, outscoring La Sierra 30-18 in the paint.
Rebekah Throns added 10 rebounds.
Â
TMU returns to The MacArthur Center on Tuesday evening for a 5 p.m. match against University of Antelope Valley.
