TMU Women's Soccer clinches berth in GSAC Tournament with win

TMU Women's Soccer earned its eighth shutout of the season against Arizona Christian University on Saturday in Golden State Athletic Conference action, leaving Reese Field with a 2-0 victory.

"We have really had a hard time scoring the last couple of games, so to create a ton of chances and put two of them away was very important," Master's Head Coach Curtis Lewis said.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the 25th minute of play when Hannah Burke assisted Kyndel Borman's team-leading fifth goal of the season. Borman later assisted TMU's second goal.

"Kyndel having a goal and an assist is great for her confidence as we go into the final week of the regular season," Lewis said.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, when Master's honored its graduating senior class as part of Senior Day festivities, TMU continued to control the run of play in the second half with a plethora of shots and a strong defense.

The Mustangs ultimately found the back of the net again in the 84th minute of play on a Kate Merical goal off an assist from Borman.

"It was great to have a freshman put the game away," Lewis said. "Kate Merical had a good game and was rewarded with being in the right space framing the goal."

Master's outshot Arizona Christian 22-2, with both of the Firestorm's shots coming in the second half after being held shotless in the opening 45 minutes.

With the victory, TMU improves to 7-3-3 overall and 3-3 in the GSAC, clinching a spot in the conference tournament as one of the top-six teams.

"Locking up a playoff spot takes a ton of pressure off of the upcoming tricky northern California trip," Lewis said.

Master's will travel up north to conclude its conference regular season with two matches, first against William Jessup University on Thursday at 1 p.m.
