In a season that's four games old, the scenario wasn't a new one: The Master's University women's soccer team dominating a game from beginning to end and still sweating through an anxiety-riddled ending.
The Mustangs outshot visiting Southern Oregon by a long shot Friday but didn't own a lead until the 85th minute when Hailey Gomillion scored to give TMU a 1-0 win in its home opener.
Master's is 2-2 on the year after showing promise, if not yet a finishing touch, during a three-game swing through Florida. The Mustangs' lone win on the trip came against Warner University. TMU outshot the Royals 20-1. It won the game 1-0.
Friday, the Mustangs put plenty of pressure on the Raiders (0-1), outshooting their guest 15-1 in the second half and 22-3 for the game, but had nothing to show for it until a sparkling combination with five minutes to play.
On the sequence, midfielder Kellian Ahearn centered the ball for Jasmine Logan, who touched it to Gomillion.
Gomillion put away her first goal of the season and the only one the Mustangs would need on a day ruled by their defense. Lacey Lehman made a pair of saves, earning her second shutout of the year and lifting Master's to .500. The Mustangs can move past breaking even Monday when they host Benedictine University at Mesa at 11 a.m.
TMU will then play home games on Sept. 7 and 8, with the University of Antelope Valley and the University of Jamestown (N.D.) coming to town.
Master's opened the season ranked No. 17 in the country. The Mustangs would like to build on Friday's momentum and go on the kind of run that would keep it ranked among the nation's best when the next poll comes out. But their focus remains on readying for Golden State Athletic Conference play.
