The Master's University volleyball team battled against Cornerstone University in their final match of the Summer Slam tournament on Thursday evening. Entering the game with an 0-3 tournament record, the Mustangs showed no sign of fatigue or discouragement, keeping each game close down to the wire. 16th ranked Cornerstone got the edge, however, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16, to keep their undefeated status.
"Cornerstone was the team that we were able to get better information on throughout the duration of the tournament," said head coach Allan Vince. "We were able to scout hitter tendencies and give our athletes more ammunition to score against their intimidating defense. We made them earn their win, and saw great things from our young crew that will propel our training as we grow together as a team."
After suffering the loss of senior middle blocker Morgan Koch (Auburn, CA) earlier in the day, the bulk of the offensive work fell to the underclassmen. Junior Kayla Sims (Anchorage, CA) ran the offense with 25 assists, while sophomores McKenna Hafner (Yucaipa, CA) and Mackenzie Delo (Chandler, AZ) combined for 26 digs.
Coach Vince was optimistic despite the outcome of the tournament. "We are excited to return to the practice gym to train with more efficiency and purpose now that the first matches of the season are under our belt."
Looking forward, the Mustangs will host the Lewis & Clark State College Warriors on Saturday the 19th at 7 pm on Bross Court for their home opener.
